Lives Ended

New London, CT. This afternoon I was sitting in class here at the Leadership Development Center; I received a page from a colleague at home. The son of our senior leader committed suicide this past weekend. He was twenty-one, a recent graduate of The College of William and Mary, and the valedictorian of his high school graduating class. And for some reason he chose to end his life.

This morning, class opened with the announcement that a young third class petty officer, who worked at the waterfront here at the Coast Guard Academy, killed herself yesterday.

Two deaths. Two young lives ended by their own hands. Two desperate cries,

I am nothing but empty, sad, and distressed. While I could ponder a host of philosophical, sociological, and cultural questions, I'll not.

May we remember (and give thanks for) their short lives. And, may we pray for their families and friends.
