Man shot dead outside Portsmouth bar; arrest made after chase

PORTSMOUTH — A man was shot and killed during a fight outside a Court Street bar early Sunday.

Police arrested a suspect in the shooting after his car crashed during a chase through the Downtown Tunnel.

Police found the gunshot victim at around 2 a.m. near the parking lot of Thumpers Bar and Grill in the 600 block of Court St. , police said. Maurice Branch, 25, of Portsmouth was taken to Maryview Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:24 a.m.

Officers chased a car speeding away from the scene and followed it through the Downtown Tunnel, police said. The car crashed on the Norfolk side of the tunnel, and officers arrested the driver, who was not injured.

The suspect was identified as McAllen Mathurin, 34, of the 900 block of Ketch Court in Chesapeake. He is charged with murder, use of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Police said a fight had been going on outside the club before the shooting. Police did not release other details.
Thumpers is only a couple of blocks from my house in Olde Towne and is across the alley from my church, Trinity.

Those who say Portsmouth is a black hole in the universe will have ammunition for their rants.
