The sheriff steps down from party leadership

News flash: Gary Waters, sheriff here in Portsmouth, finally realized that perhaps he wasn't doing his fellow democrats any favors by sticking around as the party chairman.
Gary W. Waters, the longtime sheriff who last month lost a primary, announced Thursday that he is resigning as head of the city’s Democratic Committee.

Waters, whose resignation takes effect Monday , said he wanted to take media attention off recent controversies surrounding his office and let the local party committee prepare for the November elections.
I still wonder if he will go quietly.
