Of Coast Guard aviators and survivors

A Coast Guard rescue swimmer with the pilots from Airstation Atlantic City, N.J., prepares an elderly man and woman for transport to safety.

Amazing stories...
Coast Guard helicopter pilot Dave Hall says the news footage coming from the Hurricane Katrina disaster area "doesn't even begin to paint the picture" of the devastation.

Hall's unit, one of the first Jayhawk helicopter rescue crews to respond in the hours after Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast, returned to its home base at Air Station Cape Cod on Tuesday. Crew members spent the past week plucking people from rooftops, hovering above waters thick with sewage and corpses in the New Orleans area.

"We saw a lot of things that you'd never even imagine," said Hall, 27, a Phoenix native.
