I've decided to shift my campaign to get boaters to wear PFDs. The problem isn't the boaters; the problem in the manufacturers of PFDs.
From today's Washington Post:
Philip Merrill, the prominent publisher and former diplomat whose body was found floating in the Chesapeake Bay on Monday, apparently took his own life after struggling with a heart condition for more than a year, his family said last night.I'm eating my words; wearing a PFD, at least in the current style, wouldn't have helped Mr. Merrill.
Merrill, 72, was found with a small anchor tied around one or both ankles and what investigators believe was a shotgun wound to the head, according to a source familiar with the investigation. The source said Merrill had bought a shotgun in recent weeks.
My new campaign: getting manufacturers of PFDs to make them cover the head (like a helmet with a face mask) and to make them bullet proof. That ought to help...
