Why are we wearing ODUs?

Overheard a retired Master Chief complain about the recent message encouraging the wearing of the Operational Dress Uniform. Somewhere, I read Admiral Allen mentioning it was to "remind us we are an operational service."

Here's another Q&A I came across tonight:
What is your first memorable leadership experience? Being trapped in the radio room of my first ship (USCGC ANDROSCOGGIN) with four other people during a fire in the Yard and surviving. My roommate and I tore away the insulation on the bulkhead and beat SOS with the emergency destruction ax and someone on the dock heard us.
Yeh, I can see why he'd be climbing the foremast.
