Honor. Respect. Devotion to Duty.

I've been thinking a bit about the recent deaths of Coast Guard divers LT Jessica Hill, 31, of St. Augustine, FL, and BM2 Steven Duque, 22, of Miami, FL, while diving off the HEALY during a cold water training dive.

Wonder what they thought of each other? Wonder what sort of shipmates they were? This picture, which was posted on the Healy's web site, speaks volumes. The caption from the XO's July 30 electronic newsletter: BM2 Duque swears the oath on Healy's forecastle as LT Hill administers his reenlistment.

Doesn't take much to see these were shipmates who respected one another.

  1. This is Lt. Hill's ex-husband. She was the epitome of greatness in every aspect of her life. You are correct, this photo tells it all.

  2. I had the pleasure of spending time on board with both Coastie's. They were both truly amazing people. I am not in the CG, but was extremely close with Steven at one point in our lives. Of all the women on board the Healy during my time at sea, Jessica stood out to me as a truly outstanding woman. She and I were both divers at the time, and Steven was getting in shape for, and looking to go to diving school. We spoke a lot about diving. I was curious about Jessica because she stood out to me so much, and asked Steven about her one day. He had nothing but positive, respectful things to say about her. He consulted her with diving inquiries, and looked to her for guidance while he prepared for dive school. Yes, the picture says it all. They absolutely respected each other.
