Same meeting, different meanings

Lafarge Meeting

Have you heard about Bob Woodward's new book? Okay, I'm not going to get into a political discussion about it -- at least right now -- but I am intrigued by the whole did-we-have-that-meeting discussion now happening about a meeting between George Tenet and Condoleezza Rice. Yesterday there seemed to be some debate as to whether or not the meeting actually happened. Today, that debate seems to have subsided. What is at issue is this: what was the meaning of the meeting? The Post has an interesting article on the whole sordid affair.

So, what's my interest? This is: Woodward, in an interview on NPR last night, noted that this wouldn't be the first Washington meeting where the participants walked away thinking two different meanings from the session. Moral: follow-up in writing & keep accurate records. I can't count the number of times I've later discovered that my perception from a meeting is so far removed from someone else's that I wonder if we are talking about the same meeting.
